Zomg, she’s back D:
And they have the same doctor!
This is like Harry and Voldomort’s wands!
MY GOD…(takes off glasses)
Great. Whatta small world. The guy who gave Steffi her leg and Reed his arm is also the guy who supplies Gear.
Worse, it looks like he’s in the know on her activities. I thus wonder what his motivation is in all of this. Is he just pushing the envelope on the technology to the point of not caring what its used for as long as he sees how far it can go?
Another neat twist, Cube. Good job.
Oh, and shawarma. Yum.
He is probably a neutral party, guys like him usually are.
I’m betting he’s just really well-esteemed in his field and likely has some personal involvement in any top-grade prosthesis in the city. One of those things where once you get into a certain price bracket there’s really only so many names to be looking at.
The real implication for me here is that Gear has significant monetary backing to her endeavours. That she’s still talking with the doctor means she’s not some soldier who was injured, rebuilt, and then proved unsuited for reintegration into society or something. These are recently bought prosthetics and she’s still on speaking terms with the man she bought them from. Now we’re looking at somebody who’s either got a lot of money or who is currently employed and equipped by somebody who does.
This makes her a much more frightening nemesis for Stephi who gets most of her potency as a hero from access to exorbitant amounts of money and some of the greatest scientific minds.
If I might engage in wild and unfounded speculation, what if she’s actually connected with Heinrich’s company? It used to be an arms producer, and there could be a couple people hidden away in the boardrooms who still would like to see the company go back to war profiteering. It’s been established exactly how much of a nonsecret Blitz’s secret identity is. Somebody may have used this as an opportunity to push Heinrich towards being more interested in military tech. After all, how’s a man supposed to maintain his interest in fancy toy battle-bots when there’s a killer cyborg after his own daughter? That’s the kind of thing that’ll colour a man’s attitudes when it comes time to talk about which projects should get the largest chunks of the budget.
Total Mind**** time. What if Gear is the assassin who did the damage to Steffi in the first place?
It was all before the hair changed colors. Addium note the key of gender was left out. It was only ‘em. There was no mention of an arrest.
Keeping in mind that she’s (allegedly) seventeen, I don’t see how she’d be an assassin so many years ago. That said, I do agree that there’s almost no way she’s flying solo….
Is she 17 for the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time?
If Gear is rich enough to afford a top-grade doctor, why does she have a month’s supply of ramen noodles?
It’s easier. I can afford to buy better food, but I’m too lazy to actually cook anything. So I just live off of microwaveable meals.
Basically the same reason why she lives off of ramen.
She really likes ramen? I recently introduced my kids to it and they can’t stop eating it.
Or she’s just got her lair in a warehouse that happens to be storing ramen and she’s helped herself to some.
If she’s a freelancer then that could mean a whole lot of money but almost no financial stability. Could be she’s in the habit of keeping a supply of cheap and easily preserved foods around for her next rough patch.
holy scheisse and I thought I wrote huge walls of text, gangler, you have my respect, but aside from that I got nothing to say that I didn’t last week, though my theory is getting more feasible.
Based on his line about wanting to “upgrade” people on page 250, I imagine that he’s the social Darwinist type who will do anything in the name of progress. In fact, he may be actively plotting with Gear to dismember people so he can “upgrade” them. 0_0
He could also be plotting to gain money and power. By having Gear mutilate one of the police force, he was able to introduce the police to his handiwork, which could lead to more business for him. And should the police ever catch on to him, he’ll just send out the code signal and any of the artificial limbs or other enhancements he’s supplied could cease functioning, or even start to attack the user. “Stop hitting yourself.”
What you are forgetting is that Reed was originally going to get one from the police insurance company or whatever, which would have been a piece of crap by the way, and the only reason he met/was able to afford this guy was the fact that Stef intervened and neither Barry nor Gear knew Stef was Kiwiblitz and therefore did not know that she would introduce Reed tomBarry and pay for the arm.
No, don’t ruin everything by pointing out my lack of evidence. We can’t be sure that Barry isn’t a mastermind who does in fact know everything he needs to in order to make things happen the way I made up. And maybe this wasn’t even the first time Gear tried to send some police business his way? Maybe this was just the first time it worked?
ah, well. what they dont know wont kill them. they have each other for that.
Dun Dun DUUUUUUUUN!
I believe The Doctor has a fetish on building prosthetic appendages.
You get a robot leg!
You get a robot arm!
Everyone gets a robot limb!
He does it for science…
That can be said of so many things.
“Now I’m going to get out the rubber chicken… for Science!”
It’s only natural that he sells to the villains as well as the heros. I mean, he is an arms dealer.
And he has a leg up on the competition. Capable of getting his foot in the door without fear.
I’m going out on a limb here and saying that you guys like puns. With our body of knowledge, there’s no end to the fun!
Gotta hand it to you guys to come up with these lines without going out on a limb.
Psiberkiwi, you’ve put your finger on it. They are really handy toe have around.
Puns are against the forum rules! Toe the line, or else!
Look, if you’ve nothing nice to say, just leg it.
I hear in some places they have a hefty fee for being so punny – make a bad joke, costs you an arm and a leg.
arm getting out of here while the getting’s good.
Here’s hoping he’s being blackmailed or extorted somehow to work for her, he seems like a nice guy.
My guess is that he didn’t know about her villainous tendencies, or at least he didn’t know all the details, when he first equipped her. Now she might blackmail him into continuing to work for her by pointing out to him that some of the mods he gave her aren’t strictly legal, and that makes him an accessory to her crimes, or something like that. Maybe.
Oh, this can only lead to bad things :c At least he looks about as happy about it as I do, whatever that means.
So, I’m the only one taking this as a sign she might not be completly evil? Yes? Okay.
At this point anything’s still possible, but I’ve always had the impression that she’s more just totally wacky than out and out evil.
That, or an assassin who’s pretending to be wacky to throw the police off the scent of her employers…
I’m calling it – malnutrition will be her undoing.
Is he eating a gyro? If so I have so much respect for him.
Oh, and something something supplying a mad criminal something.
Probably a kebab, which are pure win and should catch on in the US. Here in Oz, they are omnipresent. They are Turkish IIRC.
42 has yet to have more relatives enter the scene. I want more 42 relative reveals now.
So, just like that, his “mad scientist” score trebled. He doesn’t care that she’s a murderous criminal. To the contrary, that just means she has more occasion of performing field tests for him!
“So, I heard you attacked a schoolbus. How did the buzzsaw propulsor perform? I was afraid it might jam after a dozen uses or so. It didn’t? Oh, perfect! Though maybe that was just because the targets were small. You should give it another try one day.”
Going back to the whole scene with that doctor the first time… in hindsight I’m not surprised that he’d be supplying Gear with weapons. “Now I know Steffi thinks guns are cooler, but I think knives have more practical purposes” and “I like to think of artificial limbs as an upgrade, rather than a poor substitute” followed immediately by a Gear flashback.
So he’s probably pretty amoral at best, and just really likes making guns/weapons/bitchin’ robot parts.
Ze plot, she thickens!
I can’t tell if I should be overjoyed or terribly frightened that Gear is back.
Also apparently she wears that wig constantly? Like even when she’s alone? She just wants to be pretty~
I’d wear a wig all the time too, if I looked like the bad guy from Fifth Element without it.
Is that a box of Maruchan instant ramen in the fifth panel? I love ramen!
Oh god, HE is the alter boss!
At least the hairdo kinda tells me, maybe he has an evil twin brother who likes to experiment with genes or something.
Actually, the hairdos are quite different. Note that the alter boss’s do is sawtoothed, whereas Barry’s is curly.
Why is this the track where a bunch of the cool characters are revealed to have possibly-evil ulterior motives? My heart can’t take it!
… Does he need ulterior motives? He’s in the business of selling cyborg parts to people. That’s what he did for Steffi, that’s what he did for the police officer, that’s what he did for Gear. It’s not like any new motives showed up, he just apparently doesn’t discriminate his clientele.
Ack! Surprise twist!
