If you follow my Tweeters, you might have already heard about some exciting news!
From now on I’ll be drawing another Tuesday/Thursday comic, The Trenches! If you aren’t already familiar with ze Traunches, it’s a comic written by the Penny Arcade guys and my comics dad Scott Kurtz! It’s about a group of game testers and the terrifying enterprise that game testing actually is.
Scott’s been the artist for the Trenches since it started, but with a lot of projects coming up he wanted someone qualified to take over art duties on this one. We’ll see if I turn out to be that person! Suffice to say I’m super excited for the opportunity to work with all these guys on a project like this.
This won’t affect KB’s update schedule in the future, as I plan to work well ahead on the Trenches. But for this week, things are just starting and I’m trying to learn a whole new style, so please bear with me! This week’s second KB update will go up tomorrow, and then we’ll return to our regular wonky schedule.
In any case, I can’t express how much I look forward to this whole enterprise! If you told me a few years ago that I’d be drawing a comic with Scott, Mike, and Jerry, I would slap you and then laugh and cry until I exploded. Life is pretty fuckin’ weird and awesome sometimes.

Congratulations! And also, how dare you tempt me into reading another comic. I make my grrr face at you.
Mary,
I’m a fan of your artwork, especially that horror piece you posted on tumblr a while back where you wake up in the middle of the night and the demon thing is at your door. I think that it’s really, really awesome that you are getting this opportunity, but I have to ask…
Are you still in the running for Strip Search? I only ask because it seems kind of unfair that you’ll be in that contest and currently working for Penny Arcade. Not that it’s your fault in any way, but it’s something that bothers me on their end so I felt like asking you anonymously.
Either way I hope you do well with PA MegaCorp.
My only qualm is on the actual Trenches site I don’t see Cubes name anywhere and you deserve credit for your art elevation.
I was wondering if you had a hand in this episode as the shading reminded me of the new work Scott was doing with your help of course
I was wondering why all of a sudden the strip looked better. It was awesome to begin with, but now it just looks richer and more vibrant.
You do amazing work!
I noticed the updated art today, even though it seems you’ve been doing it for the last couple updates. You had Isaac turned pretty sideways, which put more into focus his weird, toothpaste-tube geometry than I can remember happening in this comic.
How long until you’re too mainstream for me to both like your stuff and be cool? Maybe it’s already the case.
Nice to hear that. I haven’t been keeping up with PvP or PA, but will defantly now with the trenches.
All the webcomics are squooshing together aaargh
Seriously, though, congratulations!
Congratulations Cube, loved the first strip and can’t wait to watch you improve it every week. But now do I get Trenches commissions or KB commissions?!
I noticed today’s comic looked different, but there wasn’t a new name at the bottom so I thought they’d just added shading. I did not know they had brought in the artist from a MUCH CUTER WEBCOMIC THAT I ALSO READ, so now I am pretty happy. You should get your name added to the bottom of the images if you are doing the art now!
I noticed that the art had changed and it looked like your hand at work to me. Congrats and great job.
Aha! So that’s why there’s suddenly shading, I was wondering why they upped the ante from flat colors.
Well, so far so good Cube!
congrats! Good to see that all my favorite webcomics are starting to congeal together like mom’s mega-fruit BBQ jello mold! Wait, that might not be a good thing…
