“Reed’s not here right now. There is only ROBO-FIST.”
“And Robo-fist isn’t happy…”
“And when Robo-fist ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.”
“and when everybody’s happy, Robo-fist is happy. Wait…”
Ooooh, multi-purpose projectile launcher in his arm, very nice!
But single shot. That might be a problem…
It might be because of the fact that he fired a rocket first. But the rocket was silver in color and a smoke bomb. This was gold being put in. I like this projectile launcher option in his arm.
But versatile. It’s a safe bet it doesn’t just launch smoke grenades.
I do wonder why Doc Barry Ghanem, as a premier cybernetic prosthetist, didn’t give Reed’s arm an auto-loading mechanism. Then again, most autoloading weapons jam easily or are finicky with what they fire, so maybe this simple launcher system is best.
It’s also possible that his launcher is only the icing on the cake. Remember that Reed wanted a sturdy arm and that could compete with Gear’s gear? Note that rather than swinging his stun baton on Cebus, he chose to punch instead. That suggests his arm’s got serious mechanical hitting power. If Stefi’s leggerkins is more powerful than a regular leg (page 250), then maybe Reed took the same route with his arm.
It’s equally likely that it does have an auto-loading system for normal rounds, but special rounds like that have to be manually loaded to prevent problems. As for the stun baton, it very well could have that function built in as well as excessive strength.
Well the issue with autoloading semi or fully automatic weaponry is ammo storage. Sure, I can fire all of this quickly, but where am I going to store the rounds? I can’t very well put them into the arm, because then I’m going to interfere with all the electronics, not to mention that recoil will cause masses of fatigue unless there’s a fixed bolt to transmit energy to the superstructure. It’s much safer to just use a falling block or bolt action single shot and lock everything in place so that the entire arm can absorb shock.
It’s also worth mentioning that a single bullet can and will ruin your day completely, even if it’s fairly small. A 9mm parabellum round is only about an inch tall, after all, and yet it impacts with something resembling 431 pounds of force per square inch.
I’m willing to bet that Reed’s arm isn’t just prosthestis + launcher but has other tricks up its sleeve. If so, space really is at a premium with Reed prioritizing those other things over his launcher.
Ah, but you have to remember, the 9mm is VERY, if not IMMENSELY weak, unable to pierce body armor, thick clothing, and even if it does pierce, has almost no kinetic energy to do harm to the body. That is why the 7.62, 308, and 45.ACP caliber rounds do the most damage- they have butt-tons of kinetic energy that transfers upon hit and holds up, not splintering, and knocking down your target. When they go down from a round with that much kinetic force, the round takes chunks of flesh from them too. The 45.ACP goes in the size of a dime, and creates a cavity- Supercavitation- the size of a small watermelon. They go down, and it takes them that much more energy, blood, and strength that they don’t have, to get back up.
Well, I have one thing to say right here, and I absolutely ABHOR to be “that guy,” but I need to clarify. The AK-74M and later variants are all fully automatic, being able to be fired in desert storm condition, recently submerged, and in the worst conditions, and it still will absolutely NOT jam. And since Reed’s arm is fully sealed, there would be little to no problem with jamming.
Also with auto-loading you’d have to worry about accidently shooting it, so manual loading is safer in that regard.
Also, with manual reload he can wear those cross-vest thingies covered with bullets owned by Rambo that look freaking badass but realistically would be a pretty stupid thing to be wearing walking into a combat situation.
Add some dark shades and a smoking cigar and everything looks epic. Explosion in the backround not necessary.
That would be a bandolier, and I’m happy that my comment sparked this whole thing.
Mmmmm, automatic weapons such as the AK-47, the UZI, and the M4A1 (The msot recognizable weapons in movies and such) all have multiple safeties, such as thumb-safeties. They stop the weapon from firing, even if the weapon’s trigger is pulled.
I would say that the arm is just a prototype for him to try out.
Also, with all of this, it could be an internal magazine (with caseless ammunition?) and a recoil-dampening system, loaded through the tube manually. Or multiple magazines inside that have different rounds, switched around either manually or through some kind of HUD (perhaps optical?).
This system could be also be useful for non-lethal or less-than-lethal payloads for close range, like an irritant round (similar to paintball but packed with liquid pepper spray). It could also facilitate lethal rounds, as said above.
While true, you then have serious problems with jams. Given that the breakdown of such an integrated cybernetic system is probably technically complex, if you have a misfire, you’ve effectively eliminated the option of using your Hand Cannon until you have time to perform a complete maintenance cycle. Manual single shot with falling block or bolt action allows you to clear the chamber by cycling the weapon in combat, then reloading.
Am I the only one who thinks that Reed’s launcher shouldn’t work? The barrel does not look straight at the join to his wrist?
Damn, my OTPs are dropping like flies.
But I personally really like the reveal on Jones, absolutely didn’t see it coming.
Same here, for both of those.
Oh don’t even try it, you lying murder-furry! Kick her ass, Reed!
On a side note, I believe I may be emotionally invested in this comic now.
Just a tiny bit…
Murder-furry? And just who is she supposed to have personally killed? O_o
She doesn’t have to have killed anyone. After all, it is just like PETA people always say “Furry is murder” .
If PETA asks this murder furry is fake?
She plotted to have the police officers meet near the dock, and then a bomb exploded where they were parked. She may not have pulled the trigger on the bomb herself, but she’s enough of an accomplice to be counted as a “murder-furry”.
Murder-furry is just the term that Steffi applied to Alter. It’s currently unknown how common murder is in their business, but given current events, it does seem they won’t shy away from it.
Whoop! Looks like Jones knows that Reed knows that the charade’s over. And boy does he look pissed!
Also, I wonder who sent that email?
I figured it was Cho, since what we could read seemed to match her suspicions.
Most likely, but she looks weirdly happy to see him in that last panel.
That look on her face is heartrendingly ambiguous. It could be sheepish, as in “Oh no you caught me in my nefarious plan, this isn’t what it looks like, is there still a chance for us?”, it could be inviting, as in “Cho’s the traitor, trust me on this, let’s take her down together.” or it could be amused, as in “Seriously? Only Reed?” Whatever the case, I really, really want to see the next page.
I interpreted her expression as one of incredulity. Probably because Reed wasn’t supposed to be there. It’s a bit disconcerting that it’s not an expression of alarm though. It gives the impression that she doesn’t feel particularly threatened by his presence. Maybe she thinks that he couldn’t possibly bring himself to hurt her? Or maybe she knows that she could take him in a fight, arm or not?
My money’s on, “Yes, it’s my boyfriend! Maybe I can get away from this mess or sucker punch him.”
You know, I’ve also been wondering if she was going to try to claim that Cho was the traitor. How successful that would be depends on how much Reed’s already seen–given the timing on the previous page, probably too much already.
Eyes aren’t open he is sleepcop’ing
Form fitting thermal vision goggles designed so he can tazer whoever he sees after smoking their vision away. He wasn’t aiming to punch Jones but at Canis.
His thirst for justice can’t be interrupted by something so megar as unconsciousness.
still saying he didn’t survive the bomb. You don’t see his eyes because he is currently animated solely by his robot arm.
I’ve been gone for a week and come to this mess? Celesta Jones I am disappoint.
Awwww, i liked that couple. :C
And now it sank like the titanic… :c
Well, maybe she has a good reason for doing what she did and i hope its not money. :/
But still given Reed´justice sense, their relationship is as good as over. Expect we do the cop-criminal relationship which could provide some interesting situations. :3
how come no one cares about the doggie
because personally I am very curious what Cho is doing/trying to do to him
Cho’s about to bust out the newspaper. Canis is toast.
That’s what he gets for hot-dogging.
Looks like a tackle to take him down. Should be interesting to see how Cho fights up close and personal. I foresee a little ground and pound action.
Judging by the second frame, I’d say she’s trying to wrestle the gun away from him–that would be the smart thing to do anyway.
surprise, honey! it’s meeeeeeeeee
I dunno if I could ever wear a red shirt if my bionic arm had a red casing.. it gives a weird blending-in look..
Adaptive cloaking shirt. He was wearing white when he was at home. If you go back to 324 he was standing next to a red container for a while… at least I hope he was.
Oh snap the future is awesome
Possible upcoming Cho one-liners:
Sit asshole sit! Good dog.
Looks like I gotta put. You. Down.
I got pages of these…
You, sir, are awesome.
Reminds me back to the page of the dapper dog where I went slightly nuts on my own theme.
At first, thought (hoped) Cebus was a shapeshifter and 4th 5th 6th panel showed the real Jones (specially her ‘relieved’ look/cry in panel 6, and holding her baton in panel 4), but then noticed the little puff of smoke at the bottom of panel 4
Reed is now officially Iron Man’s ghetto cousin. Iron Man gets a whole suit of body armor, Reed only has a prosthetic arm.
Reed only NEEDS a prosthetic arm. Stark may feel the need to build himself a full exoskeleton to deal with a chest wound, but Reed’s a badass.
There is nothing ghetto about the Red Right Hand!
Just ask Nick Cave.
Oh, look at you Cho, being a badass all of a sudden..
And this is rather unfortunate, I liked Jones
Did ANYONE see this abrupt reveal coming?
Tha panel reminds me of when Shadowman greets the “Friends” on the Other Side when they come to collect there due.
Your talking the latest Frog Prince from Disney, aren’t you? Yes, that panel does fit.
Cube, can I just say, this latest story arc is amazing?
Because this latest story arc has been amazing.
Well, well, well…and while Daddy approved of Celesta, methinks Officer Reed’s learned that his ‘infatuation’ is indeed just that. How sad for Reed. How very, very sad. To go into a sitch and see the traitorous woman for who she is, (not knowing off-hand that she’s the mastermind Cebus), he’s getting a cold shower on who she really is.
I just finished watching the last episode of Sherlock Holmes, i.e., Elementary, where he finds “the woman” IS Moriarty! Aaaahhh….
Cold, ice cold, beyond quiche cold, beyond the Artic cold.
My heart is breaking for this man. I PRAY he has the strength of character to dust this woman before she winds up killing more people.
Fitting, yay or nay?
I was listening to Guile’s theme while reading this and now all I can imagine is reed using a shoryuken on cebus. Can’t decide if it’s awesome or not right now.
I do not care what sort of weird stuff your girlfriend, or even friend girl is into. A swift punch to the face from a hidden location does not solve problems. What ever happened to having a civil conversation in the future. Everyone just cuts off each others body parts or becomes animals…
Seriously though imagine what it would be like if he hit! “oh geezus I am so sorry! I didnt mean to hit you that hard! Are you okay?”
Man, these comics aren’t coming out fast enough! can’t wait for the next one!
P.S. anybody know of any other great webcomics?
I must commend the detail on the gun. Very nice.
What will Robo-kun say to her face? *smack!*
I’m pretty sure the obscure figure was Reed. He’s seen and heard it all.
